Busy making desserts at the front counter

A couple of weeks ago, my dear friend K and I went to watch the musical, "Guys & Dolls" at the Capitol Theatre. After the show, we were feeling hungry, so we were searching for a place to eat that was still open - it was about 10.30pm. After wandering around the area, we found the place right in front of us - Chat Thai. I had been there once before with my family, and I'm pretty sure it's popular with local thais (always a good sign). My aunty loves getting desserts from this restaurant. They make all kinds of delicious & sweet thai desserts at the front of the shop.

The menu

When we walk into the restaurant, we are told that there will be a wait. About 10 minutes later, the waitress comes by to tell us that there is a table however, we'll have to leave by 11pm, as there is another booking (giving us less than half an hour to eat), but we say that's fine (but actually feeling a bit stressed).

Drinking cups for water

We check out the menu and it takes a while to flag the waitress down to take our order. It is almost 11pm and our food still has not arrived. A couple minutes later, the waitress comes to tell us, that it is ok, we can have the table.. and all we have to do now is wait for the food.. and it was a long wait.. probably because they're so busy and there's still a queue to get a table at 11pm! Anyway, so we decide to order two dishes: the larb gai (minced chicken salad) and tom yum soup (with pork).

Larb Gai

Always one of my fave thai dishes, it was pretty hot (chilli). But perhaps my tolerance levels are low as K found it bearable. It was still very yummy though.

Tom Yum Soup with pork

Different to any Tom Yum Soup I have tried. Maybe because I normally get the soup with prawns, but they didn't have that here, so the pork created a whole different flavour. I found it very hot (chilli). I couldn't have much, even though I really wanted to. K thought that the soup was a bit bland and missing something (fish/chilli sauce).. so she requested some extra sauce (about 3 times?) and only when we had almost finished our meal, did she get her sauce (hah).

Sticky Rice with Durian

The best part of the meal - the dessert. Awesome flavour and just the right size. Definitely the highlight of the night!

The pros:
- great Thai food
- lively & fun atmosphere
- yummy desserts

The cons:
- slow service
- weird european men (tourists i'm guessing), wishing to take part in your fun photo snapping

Overall:
If you're not in Newtown, and you're craving some Thai food, Chat Thai is a great place to go. It's especially great when you are out late in the city and looking for a bite to eat. The service is a bit slow (but I put that down to the fact that they were so busy and probably understaffed) but the food definitely makes up for it - especially the dessert :)
