Shanghai Night, Ashfield

How was it?
Food: 9/10
Service: 6/10
Ambience: 6/10
Value: $

Little J and I were craving dumplings, so we headed to Ashfield in search of some xiao long bao at Shanghai Night. The restaurant always seems to be busy with waitresses bustling about here and there.

Complimentary Tea (with the random advertisement on it!)

Xiao Long Bao (Steamed dumplings) $6.50

I just love the steamed dumplings here. There is pork mince and soup inside. I love how they pack the dumplings with pork mince, they certainly don't skimp on it. When you take a bite and the hot soup oozes out, your tastebuds will thank you! Mmm.. They make the dumplings in their restaurant, there is a man sitting in a booth in the back studiously folding dumplings!

Shallots Pancake $4.80
(the steam was fogging up my camera!)

Bottom of the pancake

The round pancake was cut into five slices and it tasted quite like fried bread. It wasn't overly greasy, and it would have been great with a bowl of congee!

Lamb Skewers $1.50 (2 pieces)

The lamb skewers were sprinkled with chilli powder. The meat was a little bit tough and chewy, but the addition of the chilli definitely gave the skewers a bit of a kick.

Pork and Mushroom Dumplings $5.50 (small)

We were amazed that our order for a 'small' serve of dumplings, came out with a whole plate full! No complaints though, I love dumplings!

Overall:
Shanghai Night is a definite favourite of mine. The food is always good (and cheap!), service is a little hit/miss but it all adds to the experience! Don't forget to order the xiao long bao (steamed dumplings) - they are amazing!
Dumpling cravings satisfied :)

  2. Yum yum yum! Xiao long bao and shallot pancakes are a fav of mine. The shallot pancake looks so crispy and golden. LOL at the steam fogging up your camera, I hate when that happens!

  3. Their XLB are definitely the best of the ones I've tried (and I've tried to sample as much as possible lol). I like how the food is rated 9 and the service and ambiance is rated 6. It's true-and you might even be being super nice with the 6 rating! :P

  5. Hi Simon: They're so good, aren't they?!

Hi Steph: Yeah, it's so annoying, because you have the right angle and then the steam hits you! lol.

Hi Lorraine: I wasn't sure whether I was being too lenient or not! But, I considered the fact that it was a cheap, Chinese restaurant, you shouldn't expect TOO much in terms of service & ambience!

Hi Yas: They're so good. I wouldn't mind some now either... :)
